Personal Donor Stories
John Hiller
In 1997, John Hiller made a stock gift of $50,000 to help build the Center for Women and Children, a residential detoxification program for homeless women and children. This gift held special meaning to him because his wife, Catherine, after a battle with addiction, died of a drug overdose one year earlier at the age of 33.
"I know Catherine would have wanted me to participate in some way to help build the Center for Women and Children," said Hiller. "I didn't realize the significance of my gift at the time but, looking back, it had a greater impact than I could have ever imagined."
The Center for Women and Children opened in November of 1999 and since that time has served more than 2,000 homeless women and children.
"I remember breaking ground with the golden shovel," says John. It touched me to think the women who would be using this center have fallen through the cracks. Volunteers of America, Utah figures out what needs to be done and gets it right."
Since his gift in 1997, John has been an active ambassador for Volunteers of America, Utah. "I like Volunteers of America, Utah because of the people," continues Hiller. "I feel a real kinship with the staff. The organization has a clearly defined mission and is in tune with the needs of the community. I knew my gift would be used for the greatest good."
John encourages others to make a planned gift to Volunteers of America, Utah. "Do it! You won't regret it. It's not an easy decision to give today while you can still see the money. It requires reflection. But there is an incalculable return. It will enrich your life in ways you can't imagine. When you make a planned gift it feels so good, and over time, the return on giving is tremendous."
John's gift has truly left a legacy for homeless women and children in our community.
